What to do when changing your address in Portugal: A practical guide

If you change your place of residence within Portugal, it is important to notify the relevant authorities of your change of address in good time. This will help avoid legal and administrative problems in the future. Here are the main aspects to pay attention to:

1. Change of tax address

If you are not the holder of a Citizen's Card (Cartão de Cidadão), the change of tax address for non-residents is carried out through Finanças portal or at any branch of the Tax Office (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira).

Term: You have 60 days to confirm the changes.

After registering a new address, you will receive an email with a confirmation code.

2. Documents for the car

It is important for non-residents:

  • Driver's license: Contact the Institute of Transport and Mobility (IMT) via the IMTonline portal or an IMT office to enter a new address.
  • Car registration: Make changes to the vehicle registration certificate (Documento Único Automóvel) within 60 days of confirming the new address. This can be done through the Automóvel Online portal or at the registration desk.

3. Communal services and communication

  • Notify your water, electricity, gas, internet, and telephone providers of your change of address.
  • If the service company operates in your new territory, you can keep the contract.
  • If the contract has fixed obligations and the services cannot be transferred, it can be terminated without penalty. You can learn more about it on the websites ANACOM or ERSE.

4. Mail forwarding

To have your mail delivered to your new address, contact a CTT post office to request a forwarding service. The process takes about three days.

5. Medical institutions

  • Health center: It is recommended to transfer to the health center closest to the new address. For this, contact your new medical facility.
  • Hospital: If you are receiving treatment at a particular hospital, you can continue treatment there or be transferred to a nearby facility.

6. Transferring children to another school

If you need to transfer children to a new school, you can do this:

  • Through portal Matrículas for public, private schools or educational institutions (IPSS).
  • In the middle of the academic year, submit a transfer request through the aforementioned portal.

7. Work and insurance

  • Employer: Notify HR of new address to update data.
  • Insurance: Clarify address changes in insurance companies (life, auto, health, etc.).
  • Bank: Send the new address to your bank as cards or important correspondence arrive in the mail.

8. Other services

  • Registration of pets: Change your address in the System of Pet Registration (SIAC) within 15 days of address confirmation.
  • Voting place: After confirming the change of address, your polling station will be updated automatically.

9. Parking

• In areas with special parking zones, submit a request for annual parking permit (distikto) for the new address through the municipal service.
